Dermal Fillers
We can use dermal fillers (such as Restylane, Perlane) to fill or plump out lines and wrinkles around your mouth, eyes, nose and forehead. This can give excellent long lasting results especially when combined with muscle relaxing injections (Botox) e.g. around the eyes and forehead.
We can give your mouth a more youthful and defined look or even a fuller and more sensuous form. Lipstick bleed can be greatly reduced. Thin lips can also be given a greater volume and fuller appearance.
What are dermal fillers?
A dermal filler is a substance which is injected into the skin to plump it up, make it firmer and smooth out lines and wrinkles.
There are many types of filler on the market these days but Northampton Medical Services only use synthetically produced non-animal products consisting of hyaluronic acid which is a natural chemical constituent of the skin. These products are far less likely to produce allergic reactions than old-fashioned fillers such as collagen which is derived from cow hide. Newer products are available based on poly-acrylamide, and a new collagen-based product which lasts up to 12 months with far fewer allergic reactions.
Are dermal fillers safe?
The dermal fillers we use are extremely safe with a low incidence of allergic reaction. There is, however, a very small possibility of allergic reaction, which will be discussed with you when you visit Northampton Medical Services. You can expect some degree of redness and swelling after the treatment, which usually clears up within a few days.
Dermal fillers used at Northampton Medical Services include Restylane Touch, Restylane Lipp, Restylane and Restylane Perlane.
How are dermal fillers done?
1. The filler is injected into the lines and defects to plump them out. This can be made more comfortable using a topical local anaesthetic cream if preferred. We offer local anaesthetic nerve blocks when injecting the lips as these are more sensitive. The nerve block is itself virtually painless and numbs the lips for 30-45 minutes.
2. The filler remains in the skin where it binds water to produce a lift and firmness to the treated areas.
How long do dermal fillers take?
Treatments usually take around 30 minutes although your initial appointment will probably take longer as this includes taking a medical history. For lip enhancement, a local anaesthetic injection is usually given to remove any discomfort.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Typically, the results can last six to nine months but this varies from one person to another. The filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without top up treatments. Areas of the face that are used more vigorously e.g. the lips can increase the rate of breakdown of the filler and so may not last as long as other areas. When combined with muscle relaxing injections (Botox) however this reduces muscle activity and the fillers last even longer.
